Daily Stuttering Fact Nineteen and Twenty

I am going to an NSA chapter meeting today and will chunk the post into two different parts; before and after the meeting. 

BEFORE THE MEETING:

I'm pretty excited to go to the conference meeting because I'll be seeing people who also stutter. I think it'll be a cool experience and will most likely teach me a lot! I'll describe the meeting when I come back!

AFTER THE MEETING:

Wow... that was amazing. I felt like I could really connect with the people at the meeting even though they were much older then me. I heard many stories from the people at the meeting such as past experiences with their stutter and how their stutter affect their lives now. After the chapter meeting I was asked if they could run a story about my blog on the stuttering newsletter voices! Of course, I said yes! So to sum it all up I was glad to be invited to the chapter!

Tip for people who stutter: When someone bullies you the easist thing to do it brush them off. Don't send them a text saying "I don't like you doing that" or anything like that. It's only going to make them laugh and bully you more. Just don't acknowledge it. It'll completely stop them. This isn't just for stuttering, it's for any type of bullying. Try it!

Less Frequent Posts and Another Change

Hey everyone, once I hit 20 stuttering facts I shall start posting less frequently. Maybe 1 or 2 posts a week. Not because I am lazy but because it gets harder and harder to give you new facts. I have told you the facts about stuttering. The statistics about it, but it's not enough so I need to continue. I will start to go more in depth. Write more about my experiences as a stutterer than how many people stutter or the dictionary definition of stuttering. These posts won't be as frequent but they will be much longer and hopefully be more meaningful. Hope you enjoy the change as soon as I put in effect!

For many years stuttering was thought to be a behavioral disorder. That someone who stutters just needs to relax their jaw, they just need to slow down and the stuttering would stop. Some people were given lip or mouth exercises to stop the stutter. None of this worked so people who stutter were conceived as idiots because they couldn't talk "properly". It was also thought that finishing a sentence a person who stutters is stuck on is good. Same with "helping them out" on a word. I think people still believe this and it's one of the  main reasons people who stutter are the end of discrimination. What do you think?

Starting today I will change Truth About Stuttering. I will no longer post daily but post every 2-3 days to keep facts interesting and not have to put filler such as the post about The King's Speech. I will make each fact more interesting and follow a schedule.

Instead of a fact today I've decided to post a theory about sports and stuttering.

Sports: An expert is always willing to share their tips about how they get ahead or their work ethic.
Stuttering: A person who stutters is willing to share strategies, or any way to help someone else who stutters or what they do when stuck.

Sports: You will always hear stories about people who rose from the dust and became successful in sports.
Stuttering: You hear about stories where people with severe stutters work through it and also become successful.

Have you seen the movie The King's Speech? It's amazing, it shows that people have gotten through problems even with a stutter. It was a great movie to watch and I'm hoping to watch it again soon. This post will cover two things. It will refer back to Daily Stuttering Fact #9, and an interesting question asked to a blind stutterer.

Lets go back to Daily Stuttering Fact #9.

"This isn't really a fact but more of an announcement. All I have to say is that people are cruel... 

But for the sake of everyone viewing this blog I will elaborate. I went to school today and was being made fun of by people I don't know for stuttering. Normally I brush all this off but they started getting into my race and such. I was told I was an "Indian retard" and I should "go back to my own country".  They said, "You're such an idiot that you c-c-can't complete a full sentence without s-s-s-stuttering".  As  I said before I normally brush such insults like that aside but when they got into my race... I blew up. I called them a few choice words of my own and left. 

So while nothing ground-breaking happened in that incident I just hoped it opened your eyes a little bit and maybe make you think twice before calling someone an idiot for any reason.

People are cruel."

 While doing some research for this Daily Stuttering Fact I found out that the person who average stutter's IQ is 14 points higher than the national average. "Indian retard", huh?

On the same website I was reading about a blind person who also had a stutter. They were asked which is worse, being blind or stuttering? His response? "Stuttering — because unlike my blindness, people don’t understand that stuttering is beyond my control"

The National Stuttering Association is amazing. It means so much to people. I was touched by just watching some of the videos of people explaining their memorable moments. It's hard to put into words.  I'll give you a few links.

Delving Deeper Into the SpeechEasy (Part 3)

This is the final part of my "Delving Deeper Into the SpeechEasy" series. I may revisit this later but for now this will be the end. 

As I said through my earlier posts, the SpeechEasy isn't a miracle device that completely stops stuttering. The National Stuttering Association said it perfectly. "The SpeechEasy is a tool used to reduce stuttering not a cure." It is also not a long term solution. Think carefully about the statistics. After 18 months 50% of people had an increase in stuttering. Even if it does help forever, I would never get it. My stutter defines me. It makes me who I am. It gives me the drive, it helps me make a difference. I don't want to sound cliched but I'm glad to be me, glad to have a stutter. What do you think?

Delving deeper into the SpeechEasy (Part Two)

Wow... Did you know that an "unpublished study" said that the SpeechEasy only helped while reading aloud and not during conversation? That really affects my thoughts on the SpeechEasy since I stutter the most during conversations and am pretty fluent while reading aloud.  Another test that used 18 adults showed that after an 18 month period, 50% of the people's stutter became worse!

Delving deeper into the SpeechEasy

This will be a little series of posts about my deeper research on the SpeechEasy. It seems to work like a dream on the surface but after reading comments it seems they all say one thing in common.
